How SpaceX Plans to Help Ukraine
Ukraine has to cope with numerous challenges on a daily basis. Several days ago, Russia attacked Ukraine. Unfortunately, the country has seen internet disruptions with Russian troops advancing and missiles hitting key infrastructure. Hopefully, SpaceX’s internet service Starlink is available in the country. Moreover, the company continues to send more terminals to Ukraine.
Last week, Mykhailo Federov, the vice prime premier of Ukraine and minister for digital transformation wrote to Ellon Musk. He asked Musk if he would provide more of his company’s Starlink stations to the country.
He wrote to the company’s CEO “while you try to colonize Mars – Russia try to occupy Ukraine!”. The world’s wealthiest person responded via Twitter saying “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route”.
Musk’s company ultimately wants to provide the world with faster internet, starting by improving internet access in parts of the world that aren’t currently served by broadband providers.
Thanks to Starlink people have the opportunity to connect to the internet via a satellite dish that is placed on or near a person’s property.
Ukraine and tensions
U.S. President Joe Biden continues to take measures against Russia. His administration announced sanctions against the country’s central bank, the National Wealth Fund of the Russian Federation, and Russia’s Ministry of Finance. Sanctions effectively prohibit Americans from doing any business with the entities.
Moreover, the action will freeze any assets within the United States.
The world’s largest economy is adding Kirill Dmitriev, another ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to the sanctions list as well. The official said the U.S. expects its allies to take similar steps in the near future.
Last week, the U.S. and its allies announced that they will impose restrictive measures aimed at preventing Russia’s central bank from deploying its international reserves in a way that may undermine sanctions.
