Tesla started delivering its new Model S Plaid

On Thursday, Tesla began to deliver its new Model S Plaid, a high-performance version of its electric sedan. It was with a Livestream event near its factory in Fremont, California.

Franz von Holzhausen, the company’s design leader, carried a sledgehammer on stage for introducing Elon Musk and served as master of ceremonies. It was like a humorous allusion to the last event where von Holzhausen shattered and smashed a Cybertruck’s windows on the stage.

On Thursday, Musk made the entrance by driving a Model S Plaid in the test track and went to the stage before getting out of the car.

Previously, Musk promised the Tesla Model S Plaid would deliver acceleration under 2 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. On Thursday, he also talked about breaking this 2-second barrier.

Musk also said that this new Model S would come with features that make it faster than Porsche and safer than Volvo. However, he also talked about some of his safety claims.

CEO speech on the event

Elon Musk said that they are in production and will deliver the first 25 cars soon. He added that a hundred vehicles should be provided per week soon and a thousand cars per week for the next quarter.

According to the website of Tesla, all-wheel-drive Model S Plaid can produce 1,020 horsepower, with a battery of an estimated EPA-rated range of more than 390 miles. However, according to the print on the website, those features can not be available until autumn.

On Thursday, Musk did not offer any significant details on his Model S Plaid battery pack. Instead, he just said that they have a brand new battery pack.

Musk decided to quickly move on from his brief presentation of the battery to show some Model S Plaid drive images. He talked proudly about a carbon-wrapped rotor which he added to the vehicle’s electric motor.

He said in the event that someone could pick this motor up with hands, and it can be able to accelerate a car to 60 miles an hour in 2 seconds. That kind of power together with weight sounds insane, he said.

He noted that the Model S Plaid could get 188 miles of range in just 16 minutes while plugged into a Tesla Supercharger. He said that Attendees could have a chance to drive around the track. Musk also talked about various changes to the Model S Plaid interior.
